Azores 2022

When we were in Ponta Delgada, we visited a lot of beautiful places. The island is so natural, so clean, it smells like flowers with the fresh air. When we were landing, we could see the green ground with black and white cows, it is a place where it rains a lot, but even being cloudy, we didn't get any rain. My favorite place to be was Poça Da Dona Beija. It is a place full of pools with very hot water. When I was there I remember seeing a lot of trees around it and we were just relaxing. The sky was blue and sunny, and it felt very peaceful to be there. The water was so hot that we could see the steam coming out! It was so funny to be there with friends!

Azores… when again?

This is one of my favourite places in Azores, São Miguel thermal pools. These thermal pools were surrounded by very deeply green vegetation, giving it a “fantasy touch”, in other words, although it was real it felt like we were on one of those very well edited pictures (with saturations and modified colors). Moving a bit to the left, the water can be seen with the orange color, this is due to the high presence of iron and other minerals. I would like to point something out that I feel like to share, even though the thermal pools were close to each other they had different temperatures, like one was very cold while the other one was hot regardless being almost side by side.

For sure this is the best trip I have ever made, with so much natural beauty that I can not have enough of and would seriously recommend to anyone to go there.

Azores, a paradise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean

The Azores Islands are known for their breathtaking natural beauty, unique volcanic properties, delicious food and endless opportunities for adventure.

When people ask me what was the Azorean landscape that I liked the most, it is always a difficult question, because all of them are wonderful. However, I think that Lagoa do Fogo, in São Miguel Island was the place that impressed me most.

Lagoa do Fogo is a volcanic lagoon that was originated by a very explosive volcano, which is the reason for its name. Lagoa do Fogo has an extraordinary view over the entire island, once it is one of the highest points of São Miguel, being 575m high. From there it is possible to contemplate the North Coast and the South Coast at the same time, as well as the horizon as far as the eyes can see.

The lagoon is surround by a dense forest vegetation known as Floresta Laurissilva, which makes it seem like a movie. Because of this, Lagoa do Fogo is a place where we can feel the freshness, pure air and the harmony of nature. All of this makes Lagoa do Fogo one of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen in my life.

How can this possibly be real?

Well, it is, and I need to say it, it is one of the most visually stunning places I have ever been to in my entire life. When you enter the Caldeira Velha Natural Monument, the first thing you probably notice is the green, lush, luxuriant, colourful, splendid vegetation that hides behind its numerous steep hillsides surrounding the place. The path, sometimes made of rocks and stones or sometimes made of wood planks, leads the visitors towards the big attraction, the thermal water pools, who store hot water that comes from vulcanic magma chambers, right beneath everybody’s feet.

After walking for a while, we are presented with another breathtaking scenario. A small but beautiful waterfall, eroding its way through an iron-richlight brown coloured hefty looking rock. The water there is significantly colder than the other pools, but even if you don’t really want to bath in it, it is always a beautiful sight worth appreciating. You can also observe smoke coming out of small or big holes in the ground. Those are fumaroles, who eject very odoriferous gases to the atmosphere. That is why there is a persistant sulfur smell everywhere.

I hope that coming back to this unique place is possible in the near future, but until then I will sometimes recall those days in São Miguel.
